Preparing for the Grand Opening of Water For Life USA’s first retail store, Alderin Ordell (its founder) called and asked for help designing 6 new posters for display in the new store space. The excitement of the good news was doubled with the announcement of Ed Begley Jr’s endorsement of the innovative water ionization products Alderin sells.

Water For Life USA is a rapidly growing water purification and water ionization retailer which offers its customers the newest in water ionization technology. With its “pure” and “clean” water image, I thought it best to keep the poster designs equally free of distractions with simple yet strong visuals.

For most, a flashing light of an old flickering Motel Sign brings images of Norman Bates. Though to me it screams “fix me”. Sign design was represented the beginning of my career in graphic design. I consider sign design one of the most primitive form of advertising. When I was at the less-jaded age of 19, I was lettering billboards along rural Tennessee routes and Kentucky highways. The scenery was always beautiful though the weather not always welcoming.

Signs are meant to attract your attention and tweak your interest. A well designed sign can do so much more. Created by an experienced designer, they can be a canvas to effective persuade and cajole. Not always two-dimensional and not always fastened to the ground, these messages of capitalism can be sometimes be obnoxious and reflective of bad taste.

There are thousands of ways to design a sign, though only a few ways to achieve a great design. When designing a sign, it’s necessary to look beyond the sign itself and consider its surroundings and environment.
